Bowling for Columbine

In class we watched the documentary Bowling for Columbine.  This film was written and directed by Michael Moore. This documentary was to uncover the details of the shootings that have taken place in Columbine and in the United States. Do you think the second amendment is correct stating that we have the right to bear arms? Or should we dispose of the second amendment to keep our country safe from the gun violence?      President Obama is trying to take action by passing laws to keep out country safe from the  terrible things that have went on in our past, like the columbine school shooting.

April 20, 1999 stared off like a normal day for the students at Columbine school. The bell rings and it is time to go to class.  Everything was fine until 11:19 A.M. when teenagers, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, enter the school library then picking and choosing students to be shot. The whole school erupted into a huge wave of panic and terror. Before they would shoot the victims, they would harass or make cruel jokes about them. This is the most horrific and deadliest school shootings in the United States history. They killed thirteen innocent people, twelve students and one teacher, but left twenty three injured. What was going through the minds of Dylan and Eric as they went into the school picking random victims and killing them? Why do other countries not have this issue like the United States?

The Second Amendment states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Do you think when this amendment was passed those 223 years later that this would cause such uproar of violence and harm to the people? No, where did all humanity go in our world, now days that guns do is kill things. Not only are we killing people in our country but others as well. We are currently invading other countries such as, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and many more. We are in these countries to protect but at the same time we are killing people! Why is the United States so reliant on guns?  Guns are an easy fix to problems, don’t like someone no big deal there are 270 million guns that you can choose from to kill that person.

On Wednesday 16, 2013 President Barack Obama signed the 23 executive actions to help protect and save lives in the United States.  Not only did he sign the actions he made sure that if you are to buy a gun a more intense background check must be made, whether you are at a gun store or an auction.  President Barack Obama quotes, “This is our first task as a society keeping our children safe.” Obama made the right decision to enforce these laws to keep our country better and in less harm’s way.

Do guns kill people or do people kill people? This is one of the most debatable sentences. Most people would argue one way or another but me I think that it goes both ways.  I feel that we need to enforce more laws on gun control and make it harder for people to get their hands on guns. This would hopefully cause less violence and destruction in our country. Do we really need to feel safe in our own homes by keeping a loaded gun under our pillow at night?

In this blog I talked about the shooting of Columbine, the second amendment, the signing of the 23 executive actions, and my opinion on whether or not we should have guns or not. Let’s keep our world safe and keep guns out of hands and mind.

  1. I have to disagree with your statement. Banning guns will do nothing to stop violence. With illegal weapons sales being in the top 2 most profitable criminal businesses in the world, people will still be able to get there hands on weapons. Drugs are illegal people still get those.

  2. Shelby! I really liked when you said this "Guns are an easy fix to problems, don’t like someone no big deal there are 270 million guns that you can choose from to kill that person." Because it is so true. Our country has gotten so gun reliant it is almost sickening. I also like what you said when you were talking about if guns kill people or if people kill people. I agree with you on that too, if there weren't any guns, than we wouldn't have to worry about if people killed people or not because there wouldn't be any guns, but since there is guns you have to point the finger at the person pulling the trigger.

  3. I like the blog. However I must disagree with you about Obama's executive orders, I believe he tried to do the right thing but seriously messed it up. The reason he passed the laws as executive orders is because he knows they wouldn't have made it through any actual vote. That is not democracy that is an autocratic decision. Secondly the statement guns don't kill people, people kill people, can't be argued it is a fact a gun does not think it is an instrument used by a person. Saying any different is like saying Mozart's pencil wrote his symphonies, which is just ridiculous no pencil has that sort of thinking capability.

  5. I strongly disagree with your blog. I agree with the fact that to many innocent people are killed by guns but the guns are just the tool used. The people are the ones making the decision to kill people not the gun. If someone wanted to kill someone and they don't have a gun they are going to find another way to do it. Yes the US has the most murders of any other country but I feel like every one blames that on our guns. its not only about 50% of murders in the US are gun related. It just seems like all of them are gun related because that's what the media wants us to believe. If guns were outlawed it isn't going to fix anything. Illegal gun distribution it the 2nd largest illegal trade in the world. If criminals want guns they are going to get them. by taking our guns away we are leaving a bunch of innocent people without guns to protect themselves from the real threat. The people that are sick in the head and want to kill people.

  6. I have mixed feelings about this blog. First there was too much about the movie it self. The assignment was how does the 2nd amendment gun control and the media play into our society. Not a movie review. I think that the president is trying to solve the problem but its a long ways for being perfect. I also think that banning guns in general isn't going to solve the problem. The Black market isn't going to stop selling guns to people just because they are illegal. I meal look at drugs they are illegal and people are consistently doing them all over america.

  7. I personally like your intro and how you started off talking about Columbine. I think Cowboy was a little off point there. I did enjoy the blog in itself. I liked the links and I can definitely tell you put some effort into this.
